Step 1 is always to have a lengthy conversation with the director regarding the history of the film production. This is sort of a de-briefing of events to get us up to date, as often we are late comers to the scene. We discuss the musical needs of the film, determining what emotional and plot development impact the music should have. If the film is locked, we will at this point likely have a detailed spotting session, deriving from the director where music should and should not be, and how it should and should not function.
